Save the Mountains!

In honor of “Stop Mountain Top Removal Week”
sponsored by: the Outdoors Bloggers Summit

First the rant and rave…
Why do we permit this to happen in our country? Do we have no more respect for our landscape and natural resources than to allow energy companies to harvest the resources they want by raping and pillaging natures wonders? There are other ways to get coal that don’t destroy the landscape, don’t have this much impact on the environment and the communities it is happening in. The Appalachian Mountains are home to some of the poorest rural communities in our nation – why do we allow energy companies to come and destroy their homes, their environment and their landscapes. I guarantee you that if someone was trying this in the Berkeley hills or the Colorado ski slopes they would be tarred, feathered and ran out of town quicker than you can say “coal mine”. Why did it take Hunt Smart Think Safety and the Outdoors Bloggers Summit for me to hear about this? (Thanks guys, I do appreciate getting to hear about it) Why hasn’t it been in the national news?

OK – stopping to catch my breath -- that is enough of my rant, but that was basically my knee jerk reaction when I first read this post and the links I followed from it.

Now, facts and figures…
Instead of taking the time to compile and analyze everything here I’m going to pass you on to all the wonderful organizations that are out there trying to help stop this atrocity. I've done a lot of reading this past week and it is my opinion that if you value wildlife, nature, families and the environment then you need to take the time to find out more about MTR and do something about it – write letters, educate others and support the efforts of the people fighting this battle.

There you have it - a rant and a list of sites for further study with links and links and links for you to follow to your hearts content. Do me a favor, do our mountains a favor and join the fight.

Another great Blogging for Appalachia post. Thanks so much for doing this. The more people who are talking about it, the more likely it is that more people will learn about what MTR does.
