This was one of my husband’s favorite breakfast treats at his grandmother’s house while he was growing up. Before her Parkinson’s disease advanced to the point where she couldn’t cook anymore she taught me how to make the gravy. The biscuits are my own recipe and are the only thing I cook that my Hubby says are “just like Mom’s” and since his mother passed away before I got to know her I guess it will always be the only thing I cook that are “just like Mom’s” for him. She passed away before Hubby and I met and I know that he misses her. We lost my Hubby’s grandma earlier this year and we both miss her too – I plan on letting Lil Sugar enjoy this treat for breakfast on occasion and I’ll be sure to tell her about the sweet grandma who passed down the recipe.
Buttery Drop Biscuits:
2 C flour
4 tsp baking powder
1/3 C butter, softened
1 C milk
dash of salt
Mix all ingredients with a pastry blender until well blended, adding flour if the mixture is too runny or milk if it is too stiff. Butter a pan or a cookie sheet with raised edges and drop the biscuit dough by the spoonful onto the cookie sheet. Melt 1/2 cup of butter and pour over the biscuits. Bake at 425 degrees F until lightly browned on top.
Chocolate Gravy:
1 C sugar
2 T cocoa
1 heaping T cornstarch
2 1/2 C milk
1 T butter
1 tsp vanilla
Combine all ingredients over low heat stirring constantly until smooth. Continue to cook, stirring occasionally until gravy starts to thicken. Serve over biscuits.

I've never heard of chocolate gravy. My Grandma and Mom make coffee gravy to pour over biscuits and eggs.
That sounds pretty good. I'll have to give it a try sometime.
Coffee Gravy? I have never heard of that! Is it sweet like the chocolate gravy or more of a savory taste?
I've heard my sister-in-law talk about chocolate gravy, but I've never had it. Thanks for the recipe!
I'm not sure - chocolate over my biscuits? This I will have to try - although I admit to being a little apprehensive! We always just do flour gravy over the biscuits - I do like chocolate, so I will try it!
Tweightloss? What tweightloss? I want to try these!
Whow, biscuits and chocolate - two of my favorite things. I would probably serve this as a breakfast dessert after my chicken fried steak and eggs. :)
Sounds sinfully delicious!
I too grew up on chocolate gravy and homemade biscuits. We rolled our biscuits and cut them out, and put bacon grease on top to bake.
I'm having my card group in September and I'm making breakfast. We usually meet at 6:30PM. And I indend to have a big crockpot full of chocolate gravy.
Yumm that actually sounds pretty good!
my sister in law is from down south and introduced us to "chocolate biscuits" about 15 years ago and they are a FAVORITE of ours!! :) we also put some REAL butter on the hot biscuits before the chocolate - oooohhhhh SO GOOD!
Thanks for the recipe. I was down in Alabama for awhile and a friend there used to make biscuts with chocolate gravy. It was great. I now live in Utah and biscuts are not a big thing out here. I will now treat myself one of these mornings.
These sounds absolutely yummy! I am planning a girls' get-together on a chocolate theme. I might have to serve these! Thanks for sharing!
